RISC swimmers make mark at Gretzky pool

things went swimmingly: The members of the Rocky Island Swim Club returned home recently from a Brantford meet, recording 21 top-10 finishes while setting two club records in the process.

Huntsville’s Rocky Island Swim Club (RISC) joined 40 Ontario swim clubs (each with up to 20 athletes) at Wayne Gretzky’s namesake pool in Brantford, April 18 to 20 for the Ontario Division 3 Team Championships.

While the preliminary sessions and timed final events were held in a short course (25 m) pool, the finals and all relays were performed on a long course (50 m).

Continuing with an over 70 per cent improvement in personal best times, RISC swimmers broke two club relay records, met 27 new Ontario standards, and had 21 top-10 finishes including medal performances.

Fin Award for top overall time reduction went to Emily Cutler, 14 (46.8 seconds), with runners-up Olivia Baguley, 10 (24.2 sec.), and Joshua Campbell-Kelman, 15 (19.0 sec.). Hundred percent club achievers were Campbell-Kelman, Alex Griffiths (12), Jesse Stewart (14) and Nikita Pajkovic (14). Silver medalists for the girls’ 13-14 4x50 m freestyle relay were Emma Kolbuc (13), Nikita Pajkovic (14), Audrey Roodvoets (14) and Alison Sandstrom (14), setting a new club record with a time of 2:03.62.

Breaking the girls’ 15 and older 4x50 m freestyle club record with a fifth-place finish were Pajkovic, Kylie Ankenmann (18), Sandstrom and Julia Ewing (17) with 1:59.98.

Top individual swimmer performance honours go to Alison Sandstrom with an individual silver-medal performance in 200 m backstroke in a provincial B time and a bronze medal in 50 m freestyle, 29.37 long course, earning a junior provincial standard.

Other meet highlights included: Ankenmann – 4.3-second drop in 100 m backstroke;

Steven Atkinson, 11 – A time in all events; top-eight finishes in 100 m breast, back and 200 m Individual Medley (IM);

Baguley – 17.7-second drop in 100 m IM; D time in 200 m IM;

Courtney Bobyk, 15 – E time in 50 m freestyle;

Campbell-Kelman – D time in 50 m free; E  times in 100 m back and 200 m freestyle;

Christie Carr, 12 – 4.4-second drop in 100 m freestyle;

Cutler – 44.5-second improvement in 100 m backstroke;

Emaleigh Dodds, 12 – eight-second improvement in 100 m free;

Ewing – top-10 performances in 100 m free and 200 m IM; A standard in 100 m free;

Griffiths – top-8 finish in all five of his events; B  times in 50/200 m free, C time 100 m back;

Justin Helie-Masters, 13 – 2.5-second drop in 50 m free in relay lead-off, earning A time;

Kolbuc – 50 m free time in 200 m freestyle relay lead-off earning Ontario B time;

Pajkovic – A times in 50/100 m free and 100 m fly; fourth overall in 100 fly and 100 free;

Audrey Roodvoets – Ontario C times in both 50 m and 100 m freestyle;

Mitchell Roodvoets, 16 – ‘C’ standard in 50 m free; ‘D’ standards in 100 m breast and 200 m free;

Andrea Sandstrom, 11 – continued improvement in 50 m freestyle earning C time;

Kohl Steed, 13 – 11.5-second drop in 200 m breaststroke earning C time; D time 200 IM;

Stewart - 0.9-second improvement in 50 m freestyle, earning E time; 6.2 seconds off 200 m free;

Autumn Urquhart, 13 - 0.8 seconds off her 50 m freestyle earning E standard.
