I was outraged at the article that you printed about the fire, regarding the two police officers. It comes out sounding like the three heroic women who were working that night were inept: “no rushing staff, no fire alarm, now panicked” (Forester, 2008).
The three women had first gotten the list of all residents to make sure that no was left, as the smoke began to engulf the building. The fire alarm was pulled prior to the police officers’ arrival, only had been shorted out due to the electrical fire.
The women had no phone service and activated 911 on their cell phones. It was the systematic evacuation by these women that led to the rescue of the people they consider part of their family, the residents.
The Forester manages to name the police officers and passersby and not the three amazing women who displayed dedication, courage and knowledge in helping the residents to safety.
Yes, the help from all concerned was nothing short of amazing, but let’s not forget these women. They deserve our recognition, praise and acknowledgement for their accomplishments.
These women, as well as every other staff member at Rowanwood, have been working non-stop to ensure the safety and smooth transition from the tragic events that took place last Sunday.
Support will be needed for all concerned as reality is just now setting in for both staff and the residents who went through the horrors of that night.
Please, let us recognize and commend the staff, volunteers and the generous outpouring of items from the community. All have rallied together in the wake of this tragedy.
