The Huntsville Hurricanes junior boys’ team travelled to Waterloo to compete in a tournament hosted by the Waterloo Wildhawks over the weekend.
In their first game the Hurricanes were matched against the Timmins Titans. The game turned out to be a very physical affair with the Hurricanes down by three at the end of the first quarter, 22-19. The Hurricanes then picked up their intensity and held a 45-35 lead at the half. The Hurricanes continued to expand their lead in the second half and won 79-63.
Huntsville’s scoring was well spread as Dylan Teakle scored 17, followed by Kurtis Lawes with 16. Other double-digit scorers were Oliver Wolfe with 12 and Jacob Austin-Edsall with 10. Jarred Hoo and Lucas Dernott also helped the cause with nine points apiece, while Phil Stevenson scored three and Tyler Rae added one.
The Burlington Thunder were the Hurricanes’ next opponents and this game turned into a closely contested, intense affair. The Hurricanes led by five at the end of the first quarter and by two at the end of the half. At the end of three quarters the Thunder were up by one, with the lead changing hands on a frequent basis. In the fourth quarter the Hurricanes made a couple of costly errors, which ultimately led to an 83-76 loss.
The Hurricane’ scoring was well spread again as Wolfe had 15 points, Teakle and Rae had thirteen points each, Austin-Edsall had 12, Lawes had 10, Hoo had eight and Dernott had five.
The Hurricanes were relegated to the third-place game due to the loss to Burlington and the Woodstock Chill were their opponents. The Hurricanes got off to a strong start and led at the half by fifteen, 41-26. The Chill refused to quit and battled back in the second half with some hot shooting to cut the margin to two.
The Hurricanes refused to give up the lead, swung the momentum and ended up winning by eight, 68-60. Huntsville had five players in double digits: Lawes with 14, Teakle and Hoo with 13 apiece, Rae with 12, and Austin-Edsall with 10.
Other scorers were Wolfe with four and Dernott with two. Teakle was chosen to the all-star team for his strong play during the tournament.
