Huntsville Horticultural Society News
Greetings from this side of the dirt. Ignore the pouring sleet. I heard a song sparrow singing his heart out somewhere in that white-out. The sap is running, the raspberry canes are sprouting and the Huntsville Horticultural Society’s first 2008 meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, April 22 at 7:30 p.m. at Sutherland Hall on High Street. Yes, Virginia, summer is coming. Bring it on.
The Huntsville Horticultural Society has an impressive roster of speakers who will entice you out of your armchair this growing season. Heading up our calendar is Kathy Woods. You have probably read her articles on gardening in the Muskoka Sun. A few years ago she shared her slides of a very impressive tour she took of some English gardens. This Tuesday she will take us on an armchair garden trip to Malaysia. No passport is necessary.
Looming on the horizon is an edible wild plant and medicinal talk, a first-ever bonanza plant sale, a couple of plant shows, a community planting blitz of the downtown core, a garden tour, a talk on organic gardening (very now), another on garlic (yum), and yet another on gourds.
In addition to speakers, our monthly meetings, which are held on the last Tuesday of every month, have several generic components: snacks, door prizes and a green elephant table that features gardening books, magazines and plants. They are yours for a small donation.
You can also pick the brains (no donation necessary) of several master gardeners, who are also members of the Huntsville Horticultural Society. We are very proud of them. So, mark your calendars, folks, and stick with us. Your feet won’t touch the ground until December.
