RISC swimmers bring home awards from meet

HEAVY MEDAL: Rocky Island Swim Club members gather with their awards from a recent trip to a meet in Bracebridge. Nineteen swimmers made the trip and returned home with many medals and personal best times.

Nineteen Rocky Island Swim Club ‘competitive’ level swimmers returned home with a heavy medal cache from performances at an April 5 to 6 swim meet in Bracebridge.

Swimmers in the 100 per cent personal best (PBs) club were Joshua Campbell-Kelman (15), Justin Helie-Masters (13), Mitchell Roodvoets (16) and Kohl Steed (13). The Fin award for top overall time reduction by an athlete went to Christie Carr (12, 19.3 seconds dropped) with runners-up Steed (17.3 seconds) and Emaleigh Dodds (12, 10.9 seconds).

Olivia Baguley (10) broke her own club record in the 100 m butterfly with a time of 1:46.01 as well as earning gold medals in both 50 m and 100 m fly and bronze medals in 50 m breaststroke and 100 m backstroke.

Courtney Bobyk in her first meet as a 15-year-old, dropped 2.4 and 2.1 seconds from her 100 m back and 200 m individual medley (IM, combination of all four of the competitive strokes) respectively.

Campbell-Kelman swam to an Ontario E time in 100 m freestyle. Carr dropped 8.5 seconds off both her 50 m breast and 100 m free.  Dodds took eight seconds off her 50 m butterfly, while Roodvoets earned a C time in 100 m free as well as adding an E time while dropping 5.9 seconds off his 200 m IM, bringing home bronze medals in both events.

Julia Ewing (17) came home with a gold medal in 50 m freestyle as well as silver medal in 100 m breast. Four golds in 50 m back, fly and freestyle as well as 200 IM, in addition to a bronze medal in 50 m breast, were awarded to Helie-Masters for yet another consistent meet performance.

Six top-two spots were secured by Nikita Pajkovic (14) with golds in 50 m/100 m fly and 100 m/200 m freestyle added to silver medals in 50 m free and 100 m backstroke coming off knee surgery in late December.

Alison Sandstrom (14) swam to gold in 50 m/100 m back and 50 m free with silver in 100 m free and bronze in 200 m IM.   

Audrey Roodvoets (14) earned a bronze medal in 100 m freestyle in a provincial C time as well as D time in 100 m backstroke, while Andrea Sandstrom (11) earned D in 100 m back, E for 100 m freestyle and bronze medal in 200 m IM. Steed, on her way to 100 per cent PBs, earned a silver medal in the 50 m breast, a bronze in the 100 m breast and an E time for 200 m free.

In just his first year in the sport of swimming, Jesse Stewart (14) earned a silver medal for his 50 m fly. An E time in the 50 m freestyle was achieved by Tori McLaren (14) and there was yet another time drop for Rachel Reeds (14) in her ever-improving 100 m freestyle.

Finishing off the RISC field were Rylan Streight (12) earning bronze medal in 50 m breast as well as 6.8 seconds off his 100 m freestyle, and Autumn Urquhart (13) finishing top 10 in all events including a five-second drop in 200 m IM and fourth place finish in 50 m breast.
