Apr 16, 2008

The North Eastern Ontario Women’s Hockey League (NEOWHL) regular-season title may have eluded the Huntsville Honeys this season but that did not stop them from going to the Ontario Women’s Hockey Association (OWHA) provincial championships in Mississauga this past weekend.

The team ended this season in second place in the NEOWHL and was looking forward to the provincials. Huntsville began its quest for the provincial senior C championship against Newtonbrook. This game was very spirited and energetic with plenty of great chances. Huntsville was ahead, but Newtonbrook got back into the game with two quick goals. Newtonbrook put in the game-winning goal with 1:13 left in the third for a

3-2 victory.

Huntsville’s next game was against the Toronto Tornadoes. Huntsville and Toronto tied 2-2 after Huntsville got into penalty trouble.

Huntsville, still winless, was in third place in their pool, had to play Grafton to continue into the quarter-finals. Huntsville beat Grafton 3-0, giving Dawn Corless the shutout.

Later that night, Huntsville had to play Newtonbrook again to continue into Sunday’s medal rounds. Newtonbrook opened the scoring in the first period. It took Huntsville until the last minute of play to get the tying goal. This game went into double overtime, where unfortunately Huntsville fell to  Newtonbrook 2-1.

The loss eliminated Huntsville from the championships.
