As representatives of Huntsville Public School families it’s with mixed emotions we write this letter.
Since 1995, Huntsville Public School has offered a unique program known as the Alternate School Year or “ASY.” The ASY program, originally started under the Muskoka Board of Education, allowed students to attend classes starting in August with holiday time spread throughout the school year.
The program responded to the needs of residents of Huntsville busy during the summer who were then able to take vacations with their children during the quieter months of October and March. Research indicates that some students benefit from better information retention with shorter holidays spread through the year.
This past Tuesday night trustees from the Trillium Lakelands School Board voted six to three in favour of closing the Alternate School Year program with declining enrollment cited as the reason.
While the enrollment figures cannot be disputed, it is unfortunate that the Board of Education could not be convinced to see the broader picture of choice in public education. Much is made about different teaching and learning styles and the ASY program had a unique role to play.
Regrettably, the board led the Parent Council through a review process which lacked imagination and long-term thinking. We don’t believe the “how can we make this work” question was ever asked.
Days leading up to the vote the School Parent Council forwarded further suggestions and recommendations to the director of education and trustees which were never given full consultation or consideration.
Beginning next September Huntsville Public School will offer a single-stream calendar program. Our tag line “a school for all seasons” will change to a “school for all reasons” as we have many reasons to continue the proud traditions established at HPS.
To our principals, Ms. Sharon Stahls and Mr. Todd Truax, teachers, and staff, thank you for making our school a caring and safe place to play and learn. You truly are a vibrant, supportive group of educators that contribute to our local community.
Finally, as is customary at the end of a career, a retirement party is being planned for the “Alternate School Year.” While the date is not set yet, we would like to invite the past and present Huntsville Public School community to come and celebrate with us. As with any party of this nature you’ll expect lots of pictures, laughter, some good food and handshakes. Oh, and, one other thing. Tears.
