Huntsville swimmer takes stab at Olympic team spot
Apr 02, 2008

The chance of a lifetime awaits a Huntsville athlete this week.

Veronica Medon of the Muskoka Aquatic Club (MUSAC) is in Montreal to compete at the CN Olympic trials.

The 16-year-old swimmer qualified for Canada’s Olympic trials in the 100-metre butterfly late last year.

Medon was the only swimmer from the Muskoka area, and one of only three swimmers from the Huronia region, who qualified to compete at this prestigious international competition.

Medon trained for the event eight times per week between pools in Huntsville and Bracebridge, each practice being 1.5-2 hours in length. She swims anywhere from 4-6 km per practice depending on what the team is working on, including technique, aerobic, anaerobic or a-lactic training phases.

If Medon is successful in making the team, she will be part of the national contingent heading to the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, China.

CBC is providing live coverage of the trials, which began Monday.
