Pine Glen Public School hosted its annual public school hockey tournament last Wednesday.
Pine Glen, Riverside and Irwin were the participating Huntsville schools along with schools representing St. Peter’s from Parry Sound and Lakeside from Keswick. The Pine Glen Invitational gives hockey players from all levels of hockey a chance to play with each other and learn from each other.
Pine Glen won its first game against Irwin 2-1. Scoring for Pine Glen were Matt Janke and Ted Logan. Assists went to John Lapp and Kyle Heyblom. The Huntsville Sportrec committee supplied MVP trophies for each team for each game at the tournament. MVP honours went to Logan.
Pine Glen’s second game was against a strong team from Keswick. It was a close game ending in a 3-3 tie Scoring for Pine Glen were Carley Gray, Lapp and Janke. Assists went to Brodie Muckler, Logan, Scott Roffey and Connor Martin. The MVP of this game went to hard-working Connor Hogg.
St. Peter’s from Parry Sound was Pine Glen’s third opponent. St. Peter’s came out strong and peppered Pine Glen goalie Natalie Robinson with a lot of shots. Pine Glen lost 4-0, but Robinson got MVP honours for her strong effort.
Pine Glen had to play an extra fourth game to allow Riverside to play their third game. The game was close with Pine Glen coming away with the 3-2 win.
Muckler and Lapp got the first two goals and Brandon Stapleton scored to solidify the win. Assists went to Scott Arlidge and Casey Groomes. Scott Roffey earned MVP honours.
Irwin won one of their three games. Scoring for Irwin were Josh Benedetti, Tyler Ralph and Zach Jackson. Assisting were Dylan Brown, Benedetti, and Ralph. Tyler Coleman was solid in net for Irwin all day.
Riverside was the third Huntsville team, and although they didn’t win a game they played well and had close games. Scoring for Riverside were Justine Treadwell, Richard Middleton, and Justin House. Assists went to Liz Shortt, Jordan Trethney, Corey Secord and House.
Matt Garrod and Andrew Mc Neil shared the goaltending duties for Riverside.
Lakeside from Keswick was the champion of the tournament, but all the players had a great day of hockey
