RISC swimmer qualifies for team

Alex Griffiths (12) of the Rocky Island Swim Club qualified for the Huronia Region Swim Association’s long course (50 metre) tour team, which will be travelling to Montreal Olympic Trials in early April, with his performance at the University of Ottawa Gee Gee Winterlude Meet, early March.

Griffiths earned two each of gold , silver and bronze medals to become the highest performing Rocky Island swimmer of the meet additionally earning the 100 per cent improvement award and fin award for most time overall time reduction for the meet.

Olivia Baguley, nine, earned an Ontario C time standard as well as breaking a seven-year-old club record for girls 10 and under in her first attempt at 100 m butterfly.

Thirteen-year-old Justin Helie-Masters earned a silver medal in 100 m fly as well as a drop in 50 m freestyle earning A standard.

In her first swim competition in over a year due to a knee injury and months awaiting surgery, Nikita Pajkovic, 14, proved she is back in form, dropping time in all events, bringing home gold medals in both 100 m freestyle and butterfly in addition to bronze medal in 50 m freestyle.

Taking home gold, and earning A standard in the 100m backstroke, was 14-year-old Alison Sandstrom. She added silver medals for performances in 50 m free and 50 m backstroke.

Courtney Bobyk (14) finished eighth with a strong swim in 200 m breaststroke in a D time. Emma Kolbuc (13) had a controlled technical swim in 200 m freestyle, resulting in a 1.6-second improvement. Lena Petersen (13) improved time in six of her seven events including an 11.4-second drop in her 200 m Individual Medley (IM) while Rachel Reeds (14) took 4.4 seconds off an ever-improving 100m backstroke and Jesse Stewart (14) dropped 3.8 seconds in a very strong 50 m fly and finished sixth in his first-ever 200 m freestyle.

While the month of March is set aside by Swim Ontario to be a competition-free month to refocus on technical components of swimming, RISC competitive level swimmers will be awaiting April to attend Spring Sprint in Bracebridge and Ontario Team Championships in Brantford at the Gretzky centre.
