Sensationalizing kitten’s death was wrong
Mar 12, 2008

Re: College student’s cat killed after being put in washing machine, Huntsville Forester, March 5.

While I agree in principle to freedom of the press and a citizen’s right to be well informed, I have to take issue with the article about the kitten.

It is my hope that those responsible for this abhorrent disregard for life will be punished to the full extent that the law allows.  All those who partook in the killing need psychiatric evaluation as they obviously have very serious mental problems.  History tells us that many serial killers started out their careers killing animals.  My heart goes out to all those who loved that poor, defenseless kitten.

My issue with the Forester is not that you printed the article, but rather with the shock value presentation. The picture of the kitten helped drive the point home in a strong way, but the heart-wrenching details of how the kitten died could have been explained less graphically.

Is it in the best interests of say, a child, who perhaps is drawn to the article by the picture and then reads it, to print the gory details of how the kitten died? When the police determine those responsible for this vicious act and the courts pass down judgement, printing the names of the scum who committed this unthinkable act might be more newsworthy.
