The death occurred of Catherine “Arlean” Roehl at Eastholme, Powasson on Feb. 18, 2008 in her 95th year.
Beloved wife for 71 hears (July 18, 1934) of the late Otto Roehl (2005). Loving mother of Janet Embury (Harold) and dear grandmother of Christopher Embury (Lisa) of Huntsville.
Mrs. Roehl was born Sept. 21, 1913 at Ryerson Crescent in Burk’s Falls, the daughter of the late Laughlin Leslie MacPherson and Letitia Amanda Shay MacPherson (formerly of Huntsville). Sister of the late Charles and Leslie MacPherson.
Arlean’s first job was working in her brother Charlie’s tuck shop at the Ahmic Harbour Hotel and some of her fondest childhood memories were her trips down the Magnetawan River to Ahmic Harbour on the Winona Steamship that her father drove.
Arlean and Otto both worked for several summers in their younger years at Grandview Resort on Sparrow Lake, owned by Otto’s uncle. They also lived in Toronto for a few years, where Otto worked for John Inglis Company but they soon returned to the Burk’s Falls area. Arlean became very active in the Burk’s Falls United Church women’s group and the Sunday school.
Otto and Arlean started the Lake Cecebe Trailer Park, which they operated for 25 years. Arlean enjoyed swimming and boating and loved to take her grandson Chris fishing. She used the art of positive motivation (gold stars) to encourage all the kids at camp. Arlean would look after the camp during the days while Otto worked at the Burk’s Falls Hardware. She always made everyone feel so welcome, having them in for tea and her famous date squares, brownies and cake that the same campers returned every year. Arlean always had genuine concern for everyone and put their needs before her own. She will be sadly missed by all who knew her.
Mum, you were oh so very rare, content with home and always there to love and listen, help and guide. We’ll always remember you with love and pride.
The service was held at the Opatovsky Funeral Home, Dempster Chapel, Burk’s Falls on Feb. 21, 2008, with Reverend Maureen Ellison officiating. Eulogies were given by Sheila Himburg, Harold and Chris Embury and Floyd Robinson.
