Henry and Elizabeth Hares, shown here, were among the first white settlers in Stephenson Township, District of Muskoka.
The Hares’ hand-hewn squared-log house, built in 1872, today helps illustrate the local pioneer story - lives and hardships - to international visitors at Muskoka Heritage Place, Huntsville.
Right now, the Hares’ roof is protected by a tarp.
The Finance and Administration Committee of Council just last week endorsed support to help fund the repair of this irreplaceable, publicly-owned, heritage, artifact asset. Anyone willing to help with with labour, material, or expertise is urged to contact Ron Gostlin at 705-789-7576, ex. 3210. Charitable donation receipts are given for cash gifts.
The Hares raised 14 children in their pioneer home. Hopefully, they are all resting easier now.
