On Saturday both Hidden Valley Nancy Greene teams ended their racing season with giant slalom races.
The NG No Fear team, coached by Rod Adamson, travelled to Horseshoe Resort. Despite being short two racers, the No Fear team edged out Oshawa for the win. They took the top five positions. James Eydt was first, Mark Draper was second, and Benjamin Levy was third.
Ryan Ford’s NG Flyers headed to Collingwood on Saturday to race against the Caledon Ski Club at the Toronto Ski Club. Outnumbered with only six racers, the Flyers came up short and lost to the Caledon squad.
The Flyers had only one race this season where all of their racers were present. The team developed a motto: “small in number, strong in heart.”
Coach Bruce Campbell travelled with his Miele-sponsored J Alpine Lightning team to Milton for the Tier 1 finals on Sunday. This was a final where the top six of the 32 teams in the alpine series raced for top honours in a giant slalom race.
The first half of the course was on a flat where the racers had to ‘skate’ and pole hard to gain speed into the pitch. The course was not felt to be very challenging and as a result the skiers’ times were all very close. This made it anyone’s race to win.
The home team, Milton came out on top with a score of 238. Devil’s Elbow was second with 191 points, Hidden Valley third with 152 points, Horseshoe fourth with 150 points, Oshawa fifth with 145 points, and Kimberly sixth with 119 points.
Leigh Cameron was the Lightning’s sole podium finisher. He was second. The other HV racers contributing to the team’s points were Peter Weber (seventh), Heather Sinclair (10th), Darcy Wiltshire (12th), Kyle Litchfield (16th), Kelly Harper (17th), and Carly Litchfield (22nd).
Honourable mention goes to Taylor Reid, who came to the race to cheer on her team.
She injured her knee the day before the race while training and was unable to participate.
