Guns stolen from residence

Up to 20 firearms were stolen from a Mount Vernon Trail residence on Feb. 20.

The Huntsville OPP reports that the unknown culprits broke in to the house and the shed on the property and stole the firearms.

Officers are seeking the public’s assistance in locating these firearms. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Huntsville OPP or Crime Stoppers.


Snowmobile stolen from motel

The Huntsville OPP are investigating a theft of a snowmobile from Travel Lodge on Main Street West.

Sometime after midnight on Feb. 16, unknown culprits entered the parking lot at the Travel Lodge picked one snowmobile out of a group, started the machine and drove off on it.  The stolen snowmobile was a grey 2000 Yamaha 700. The registration number on the side of the machine was 870146.

Anyone with any information in regard to this snowmobile theft or any other thefts is asked to contact the Huntsville OPP at 789-5551 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).


Vehicle collision results in impaired driving charges

On Feb. 22 at about 6:45 p.m., officers from the Huntsville OPP detachment attended a head-on collision on Old Muskoka Road.

An investigation determined that one of the drivers’ had been drinking. Klaus Regert, 58, of Utterson was arrested and taken to the Huntsville detachment. Regert was charged with impaired driving and failing to provide breath samples. There were no reported injuries as a result of this collision.

As of Feb. 17, seven people have died on OPP patrolled highways due to alcohol related collisions. It is important to remember if you are drinking, take a cab or use a designated driver to get you home.


Scam suspect arrested

Officers from the Huntsville OPP were alerted to the possible suspect of the scam that was happening in Huntsville during the week of Feb. 10.

Last week, the Huntsville OPP reported that a scam was occurring where a man would approach store employees asking for money for some sort of emergency. There were four different businesses in Huntsville that reported the same event to the OPP.

On Friday Feb. 15 at about 8:30 p.m., the OPP were advised that the possible suspect was in the area again, attempting to get money from other businesses.    

Officers attended the area of the Cottage Bar and Grill on John Street and located the suspect.  

As a result of an investigation, 41-year-old John Bungaro of Scarborough was arrested and charged with several offences. The charges include assaulting a peace officer, resisting arrest and breach of a recognizance, three fraud under $5,000 charges and two breach of probation charges. One officer received a minor injury as a result of Bungaro resisting arrest.

Other police services south of Huntsville are also investigating Bungaro for the same offences.

The Huntsville OPP would like to thank the community in assisting with locating this suspect.


Break in at Cedar Grove Resort

The Huntsville OPP is investigating a break-in at the Cedar Grove Resort on Peninsula Lake.

During the overnight hours on Feb. 19, unknown culprits broke into resort’s main building. Once inside, they removed several DVDs and a television. The culprits also broke into the office part of the main building and stole money, Hidden Valley Highlands Ski coupons and an older DVD/VCR player was also found to be missing.
