The Huntsville Hurricane Major Atom Boys travelled to Base Borden for a three-game, round-robin basketball tournament on Feb. 17 with only seven players. Their first game against the Owen Sound Stingers had the Hurricanes ahead 12-11 at half time. The Stingers pulled away in the fourth quarter to win 29-24. Cedrik Ross had 12 points in a losing cause. Mitchell Martin added six, Eli Borrowman four and Jared Stachiw two.
Playing in a back-to-back game against the Midland Magic, Huntsville came out strong but ran out of energy in the second half of a very physical game. The Magic scored often in the fourth quarter and cruised to a 43-26 victory. The Hurricanes never quit throughout the game but struggled in their transition defense. Ross led the way with 12 points, Ryan Rea had six, Jarid Stachiw four, and Jordan Connolly and Martin each added two points.
In the final game the team faced the host Borden Jets Huntsville was overmatched and overwhelmed, and despite great effort were not effective with absolutely no energy in the second half. Huntsville lost 42-22. Ross again led the way with 10 points. Takiah Ebbs-Picken was one of several players who chipped in with two points each.
The Hurricanes continue to improve weekly and with competitive games becoming the norm are hopeful that their final tournament of the year in Orillia this coming weekend will bring more positive results.
