Ten members of the Rocky Island Swim Club travelled to Barrie to compete at the Huronia Region Short Course (25 m pool) Championships Feb. 1 to 3 with swimmers from 10 other regional clubs who qualified to represent their local swim clubs.
RISC swimmers finished the meet with over 80 per cent in personal best performance times. Top fin award for most overall time improvements went to Alex Griffiths (12) for dropping 36.3 seconds combined, with runners-up Courtney Bobyk (14) at 30.0 seconds and Audrey Roodvoets (14) at 29.8 seconds.
Top place finisher went to Steven Atkinson (11) with bronze medal in 200 m Individual Medley (IM, combination of all four competitive strokes), fourth place in 100 butterfly in a junior provincial time as well as fifth in 100 m backstroke in provincial A time.
Other meet highlights included:
Kylie Ankenmann (17) – 5.5-second drop in 200 m IM earning Provincial C time;
Bobyk – 17.4 seconds off 200 m freestyle; 7.2-second drop in 200 m breaststroke in D time;
Christie Carr (11) – 8.9-second improvement in 100 m freestyle;
Julia Ewing (17) – three top-eight finishes all in provincial B times for 100/200 free and 100 m breast;
Griffiths – 20.1-second improvement in 200 m free in D time; fourth place finish 50 m free;
Justin Helie-Masters (13) – bronze medal for 100 m fly; B times in all six events; all top-eight finishes;
Emma Kolbuc (13) – 3.5-second drop in 100 m breast in C time; B time in 50 m freestyle;
Roodvoets – 22.6 seconds off her 200 m freestyle earning D time: ‘B’ standard in 50 m free;
Alison Sandstrom (14) – A time in 50 m free finishing fifth overall; 2.7 seconds off 200 IM in C time.
