The Muskoka Aquatic Club (MUSAC) attended the Huronia Regional Short Course Championship Feb. 1 to 3 in Barrie.
The Barrie Trojans were host to 11 teams from around the region for the qualifying meet. MUSAC had a fantastic weekend, finishing third overall in points behind Barrie and Peterborough.
MUSAC, represented by 15 swimmers, scored the most points per swimmer of any other team at the championship.
Swimming for the 12 and under girls were Emma Barnes,11, Melinda Hubert, 10, Hailey Morris, 11 and Kristy Robertson, 10.
Barnes swam six races plus two relays, achieved six personal bests and top-eight finishes in all races. Hubert swam to sixth place in the 400 m freestyle, dropping 13 seconds from her previous time. Robertson swam four out of five personal best races, two relays and had a time of 1:18.68 in the 100 m freestyle. Morris swam five races and two relays. She dropped 12 seconds in the 200 m freestyle for a new time of 3:07.16.
Representing the 12 and under boys for MUSAC were Liam Prymak, 11 and Shawn Donaldson, 12. Both swam six races with six personal best times and stepped up to complete a 15 and over boys’ relay team. Donaldson finished second in the 50 m freestyle with a time of 32.4 seconds while Prymak had a fifth-place finish in the 100 m butterfly with a new time of 1:28.47.
The 13 and 14 girls were made up of Whitney Ann Donaldson, 13, Sarah Graham, 13 and Sontauna Rapsch, 14. Graham and Rapsch swam at their best all weekend. They both swam five races plus relays, achieved top-eight finishes and 100 per cent personal best times. Rapsch dropped a total of 42 seconds and Graham dropped a total of 39. Donaldson had top -five finishes in her races with all new best times. Her highlight of the weekend was swimming to gold in the 200 m breaststroke with a time of 2:49.86. This time qualified her for the age group nationals.
Swimming solo for his team in the 13 and 14 boys category was Noah Prymak. With gold medal finishes in the 100m butterfly, 200m butterfly and 400m freestyle, Prymak placed top three in all six of his races, had six new personal bests and qualified for the age group nationals.
The 15 and over girls had four MUSAC swimmers, Cailagh Evers, 17, Sarah Kamachi, 15, Veronica Medon, 16 and Katie Sellon, 16. Sellon swam to a new best time in the 100 m backstroke with a time of 1:30.78. Kamachi achieved personal bests in four out of five of her swims dropping over 26 seconds total. Evers swam to top-eight finishes in four of her races and to three new personal best times.
Medon had a great weekend, swimming six events and winning gold in four of her races; 100 m and 200 m backstroke, 100 m butterfly and 400 m individual medley which is combination of all four strokes. She dropped five seconds in the 400 m individual medley for a time of 5:09.10 and got a new MUSAC club record in the 200 m backstroke. The girls also swam to top-eight finishes in both relays.
Corey Helie Masters represented MUSAC in the 15 and over boys category. The 16-year-old had an amazing weekend swimming six races with four new personal bests. Helie Masters raced to silver place in four events, dropping a total of nine seconds. He swam the 50 m freestyle in 25.36 seconds and the 200 m freestyle in 2:02.51. Overall, the team swam 87 per cent personal best times.
“Our swimmers really stepped up their game this weekend and proved they are among the best in the region,” said coach Mark Shivers.
