In Huntsville in 1938 when these telephone operators posed for this picture, one’s words were transmitted - not always privately - to the intended listener. Like the children’s listening game “telephone”, sometimes the words got repeated, garbled, taken out of context, mixed-up, or even maliciously gossiped and blabbed about town.
