READY FOR A WORKOUT? Dayna Wilmon and Pat Atkinson of Huntsville Curves stand next to a piece of exercise equipment that now includes the CurvesSmart personal coaching system.
Members of a popular women’s fitness centre are getting more support in their exercise routines.

Curves for Women, at 131 Hwy. 60 in Huntsville, has introduced a new technology that allows members to customized their workouts based on their body structure and endurance.

The CurvesSmart personal coaching system offers a precision designed workout, moment-to-moment feedback and progress reports to keep members motivated while they work out.

After a Curves staff member determines a member’s personalized profile, the member is issued a CurvesSmart ID Tag. The monitor at each station automatically retrieves the member’s profile to determine the specifications for her workout when it electronically recognizes the tag.

A small monitor attached to the equipment indicates whether her heart rate is in the target range; whether the member is achieving her target intensity level; the range of motion for each repetition; and the number of repetitions. If the woman is exercising correctly, all indicators on the monitor will be green.

Following the workout, the system produces a progress report on a computer, which allows the member to see, instantly and in quantifiable terms, her strengths and weaknesses, including how many calories were burned off during the session.

Dayna Wilmon, the manager of the Huntsville Curves, said that the system is like each member has her own personal trainer walking together through the various stations.

“The CurvesSmart technology offers women the benefits of a highly skilled personal trainer without the expense. It’s the world’s most advanced fitness training system. We expect our members to be thrilled with how this amazing workout will help them achieve their goals even faster,” she said.

Wilmon said the computer automatically increases the levels of exercise for each member after each session.

“They are working at their own ability. If they feel that they can’t do what the system is asking then they stay at the pace they want. At the next workout the computer will bring the targets down.”

Huntsville Curves owner Pat Atkinson said the system has been operating at the centre since early December and more than 100 members have registered for the program. She added that members are not required to register for the CurvesSmart system, but if they do, there is a one-time flat fee of $50.

“With our new people, we are not putting them on the system instantly. We are teaching them how to use the equipment first for about a month. There is a lot to learn and if you try to teach everything at once it becomes too much for them to handle,” she said.

Atkinson herself uses the CurvesSmart program and is enjoying the benefits. “It has been awesome. For myself, since I have started using the CurvesSmart system I have lost two percent body fat,” she said.
