A delightful romp of a film, Reel Alternatives’ next movie, Moliere, creatively fills a historical gap in the biography of France’s most famous playwright. Early in his career Moliere was released from debtors’ prison but did not rejoin his acting company for several months. This movie concocts a fictional account of what went on during that mysterious time span.
Set in 17th century France, the lushly filmed and gorgeously costumed story takes place in the château of the very wealthy Monsieur Jourdain and his dutiful wife. The plot revolves around Jourdain’s worshipful love for another beautiful young woman who barely knows he exists.
When Moliere lands in jail, Jourdain arranges his release on the condition that Moliere teaches him how to make a good impression on the object of his desires.
Moliere finds himself caught up in an adventure of deceit and disguise, danger and passion, a story from which Moliere would emerge as the greatest author in the history of the French stage. The narrative is full of mistaken identities, romances and various love triangles, although, as one reviewer notes, “love octagons” is probably more accurate. This is a movie that demands little more of its viewers than to sit back, relax and laugh. Rated PG. In French with subtitles.
Moliere is sponsored by The Great Vine and will be shown on Jan. 21 at 7 p.m. at the Capitol Twin Cinema. Advance tickets are $7 at Muskoka Country Furniture and Gifts on Main Street, or $8 at the door if available.
