Saxorama is an event that is open to all saxophone enthusiasts and to those who simply appreciate this great instrument.
Sponsored by members of the Muskoka Saxophone Society, this event was so successful last year that organizers decided to opt for a larger venue. Thus, Saxorama 2007 will be held at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church on Saturday, Oct. 20 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
The featured performer at Saxorama is Professor James Houlik from Duquesne University in Pittsburgh. He is regarded as the finest classical tenor saxophonist in the world. Paul Brodie, Canada’s own ambassador of saxophone, who is one of the founding members of the Muskoka society, was instrumental in persuading Houlik to make the journey to this area.
Houlik has performed in Carnegie Hall, the Barbican in England, the Smithsonian Institute and on major concert stages throughout Europe, Canada and the United States.
His concerto appearances include the London Symphony, the Chamber Orchestra of Milan, the Czech Philharmonic Chamber Orchestra, the United States Navy Band and dozens more.
Houlik will not only be performing a solo work, he will also be offering a saxophone master class. Individuals will also be able to perform and receive valuable performance tips from him.
Musical instruments require refurbishing and repair over time. Gino Nobili, one of the best woodwind technicians in Canada, has also agreed to attend Saxorama and he will be discussing maintenance and care of instruments.
Students in both elementary and secondary schools who are interested in attending are asked to go to www.muskokasax.com to register. They will be admitted to the day free of charge as guests of the Muskoka Saxophone Society.
Adult tickets are $25 and these can be purchased either at the door or by contacting society president Kim Barlow at 789-8860.
