Huntsville Seniors
Club 55
Amid the increasing advertisements for school supplies and increased chatter about fall fairs, seniors are returning to their club activities. At Club 55, bowling teams are being formed, the floor is being prepared for shuffleboard and preparations are being made for our September general meeting.
The Zone 39 executive is preparing for its annual September corn roast, games day and penny sale for seniors in the districts of Muskoka and Parry Sound.
Those who enjoy a bargain will be sure to find several at the 150-item penny sale. Card games are always a favourite among the several activities held throughout the day. What could be more seasonal than barbecued hamburgers served with corn on the cob? This year the Katrine Seniors are the hosting the event on Friday, Sept. 14 starting at 10 a.m.
Provincially, the United Seniors have organized a convention in Cobourg for next week. The 94 resolutions submitted from clubs across the province will be discussed. Resolutions that are passed will form the basis for talks with the provincial government. At the end of the conference, elections will be held to form a new executive.
A new entranceway door has been installed at the club. Its greater width will allow washroom access for those in wheelchairs and the better fit will retain more heat during the winter months. It will be painted the green colour that has become a club hallmark.
Congratulations to Velma Borne, president of the Young at Heart Seniors in Burk’s Falls. Velma has gathered three pages of signatures for the petition initiated by MP Tony Clement to defeat a bill that would remove the districts of Muskoka and Parry Sound from our northern heritage and funding. Anyone wanting to voice their support is invited to drop into the club between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. to add their name to the petition posted on the club bulletin board.
Those who enjoy cribbage are invited to take advantage of the hospitality each Monday afternoon at 1 p.m. Last Monday, Betty Feather, James Tonks, Jean McDonald and Joan Lyddiatt were winners.
In Thursday night bridge, first-place winners Don Woolman and Bob France were followed by Beryl and Paul Clayson. Gerry and Mardi Keyes placed third, with Evelyn Green and Chris Karn fourth.
Anita Denny with a score of 81 placed first among the women in Friday night euchre with Nina Wagg second. On men’s cards, Fred Frey was first and Lil Millar second. Anita Denny and Joan Boles shared the prize for the most lone hands. Mary McLaren, first-place winner in Friday night bridge for the second week in a row, was followed by James Tonks and Bea Groh.
See you at the club.
