Ten tips for keeping yourself fit and well
Aug 01, 2007
Through special appearances and health and wellness education events across the country, Unleash Your Potential is committed to motivating Canadians to live by three major tenants of health: proper nutrition, physical activity, and managing stress.
Here are the top 10 wellness tips the program urges Canadians to adhere to:
1 – Get off the bus two stops early and walk home.
2 – Leave the car in a parking lot 10 minutes from wherever you are going and walk the rest of the way.
3 – Take the stairs. Pretend the elevator is out of service.
4 – Join a club or organization that co-ordinates active living events.
5 – Choose whole grain foods at all your meals instead of white rice, white bread, potatoes, and pasta.
6 – Minimize the amount of excess sugar you consume.
7 – Eat healthy unsaturated fats like olive, canola, soy, corn, sunflower, and peanut instead of hydrogenated (trans) and saturated fats.
8 – Eat eight to 10 fruits and vegetables per day. A diet rich in fruits and vegetables can decrease the chances of having a heart attack or stroke.
9 – Take steps to lower your levels of stress.
10 – Limit the impact of these stresses using proven mind/body skills such as the relaxation response.
