Roy Babcock, a local resident, member and regular club shuffler, is one of 10 Canadians selected by the National Shuffleboard Association to compete for Canada in the international shuffleboard competition. Teams from Germany and Australia will supplement the traditional competitors from Brazil, Japan, the United States and Canada.

Although anyone can apply to become a Canadian team member, the majority of players, including Roy, received invitations based on their tournament play in Florida this past winter.

This year the competition will be held in the Midland, Ontario arena. Unlike the customary concrete or tile courts, this contest will be held on rollout mats used at the Ontario Shuffleboard Association matches. After a Sunday meet and greet, play begins on Monday, Aug. 13 and extends through the following Saturday.

In a competition that is based as much on international fellowship as proficiency, we wish Roy and the Canadian team every success.

Because parking will be at a premium and many members will want to attend downtown’s Midnight Madness, cards have been cancelled on Friday, July 20.

Congratulations to Evelyn Wagg for her outstanding performance during last month’s Muskoka Games for Seniors. Evelyn won first place in crokinole, second in shuffleboard and third in bid euchre.

Members were saddened to learn that two life members who made major contributions to the club in previous years have passed away. Jean Antcliff is remembered for her singing voice and contributions to the musical variety shows that were a club hallmark. Tish Head was the last of a group of members during the 1960s who contributed to the volunteer force that transformed the bare walls of the town hall basement into a warm, inviting area for the town’s seniors.

The Friends of Fairvern are busy this summer raising funds for their projects. The Friends enjoyed a successful barbecue fundraiser at the Independent grocery store last weekend. Watch for their Tag Day coming soon and a raffle on their behalf conducted by Chapter 252 of the Order of the Eastern Star to be drawn on Sept. 11.

The ladies appeared to have an advantage in last Monday afternoon’s cribbage. Jane Skerritt earned first place followed by Georgina Hayward and Blanche Guest.
In Wednesday morning shuffleboard, Canadian representative Roy Babcock teamed up with Pete Ferguson to win first place followed by Marie Alzner and Ted Skerritt then Don Woolman and Jane Skerritt.

Ches and Betty Fulton finished in first place in Thursday night bridge followed by Don Woolman and Bob France. Marty Sedgwick and Chris Karn placed third followed by Fran and George Morrison then Irene Greene and Irma MacGilp.

Keith Crozier was the overall winner in Friday night euchre followed by Harold Sheen. Among the ladies, Anita Denny finished first with Barb Miller second. The prize for the most lone hands was shared by Jean Marks, Barb Miller, Lorne Guest and Anita Denny.

Betty Higgins won first place in Friday night bridge with a score of 5,060. Marty Sedgwick was second and Pete Ferguson third.

See you in the air-conditioned comfort of the club.
