More than 80 seniors representing 18 clubs from across the districts of Muskoka and South Parry Sound were hosted by the Gravenhurst club for the United Senior Citizens of Ontario, Zone 39 annual meeting.
In a morning session the zone executive met with the club presidents to discuss matters of common interest including donations to local hospitals and to select representatives to the August provincial conference in Cobourg.
At noon, the head table was piped in and a beef dinner was served. A minute’s silence in memory of deceased members, including 13 from Club 55, was included in the agenda.
Keynote speaker Ontario president Marie Smith indicated that the USCO had its beginnings near Paris, Ontario, almost 50 years ago. At that time, before CPP, seniors were expected to live on a stipend of $30 per month. A Toronto journalist, through his newspaper articles written while living among disadvantaged seniors, stirred up sufficient public awareness to cause the federal government to take financial action on behalf of the elderly.
During zone elections Vern and Rita Fallows of Baysville, Cliff Flavell of Gravenhurst and Utterson’s Ralph Awrey were returned to key executive positions and will provide continuity through the coming year. Carol Awrey was elected second vice-president.
Members were saddened to learn of the passing of lifetime member Mary Snell. A strong work ethic and devotion to family were her guiding principles. Through the club, she enjoyed shuffleboard and participated in horseshoes during the senior games. She and her husband Gord enjoyed square dancing.
A bowling banquet held at the club as a year-end finale was followed by an evening of cards.
