Alternate school year student takes action
May 14, 2008

I noticed in last week’s paper you had an article on the cancelling of the alternative school year at Huntsville Public School.

I have my two school-aged children in this program and they love it. In fact, they were so upset by the canceling of the program my nine-year-old daughter, Deanna Nadrofsky, came up with the idea to create a petition to keep the program and hand it in to the school addressed to the school board.

My daughter made the message for the petition in her own words and I just typed out the pages. My little girl then went to school armed with papers and then herself, her brother, and some of her friends went about collecting signatures from students, family members and school staff who wish to see the program stay.

At the end of it all 192 names were collected in a very short period of time.  Even though this may not change the board’s decision I think this is a call to everyone as adults that we really need to think about how the decisions we make change the lives of those around us.

It is very clear that those in the program find it useful and enjoy it. It is a shame to have it cancelled. However, I am very proud of my daughter for having such courage to take progressive action and try to put right what she sees as having gone wrong. To my daughter:  Way to go, Deanna.
