Huntsville Horticultural Society News
Greetings from this side of the dirt. Despite Old Man Winter’s reluctance to leave, daffodils are blooming and gardens everywhere are unfolding as they should. Huntsville Horticultural Society (HHS) has some exciting activities lined up this spring that you won’t want to miss. I’m here to tell you about them.
On Saturday, May 17 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. the members are holding their annual spring flower show at the Huntsville Mall. Sandra Hartill from Bracebridge will be our judge. Last year HHS won a district award for having the most entries in the spring show. This year we plan to keep it. Cheer us on by visiting us at the mall. Bring the kids. Our junior gardeners always have great entries. You might see a Parrot Tulip. You might startle the Johnny Jump Ups. You might wake up the African Streptocarpis.
Saturday, May 24 we are holding a plant sale at the LCBO/Staples parking lot. We need the revenue, folks, to finance our community projects. If you are thinning out your plants and have extras, bring them to us potted and labeled. If you need Muskoka-minded plants at bargain prices, come see us. We will be there from 8:30 a.m. until noon. If you need help call Betty Morrison at 789-1407. Thank you in advance.
Tuesday, May 27 is our general meeting at Sutherland Hall. Our guest speaker is Pam Carnachan. Her garden was on last year’s garden tour. Remember the Morgan House B and B? Her topic is organic gardening and animal husbandry.
Finally on Tuesday, June 3, HHS is organizing a planting blitz of the downtown core. We are asking every able-bodied member to meet at the town hall from 4:40 to 5 p.m. Bring garden gloves, trowels and pronged cultivators. The planting takes a few hours so you will need a hat and some water for yourself. Your efforts will make a difference. Because of you, Huntsville will be a community in bloom.
Yes, folks, there is another competition.
