In regard to our mayor and council, and all who served before in those positions.
I can recall a previous mayor who had the foresight to plan and build the Centre Street bridge. One of his councillors was adamant that it was not needed and a waste of money. This man became the next mayor and presided at the opening of the bridge at its completion. He had a plaque with previous mayor and council names on it put on the bridge, for all to see where the blame should rest for this “folly.”
Well, that plaque is now a testimony to the foresight of that council. History and its effects become apparent, all in good time.
I was taught two basic rules to live by at Girl Guides, which would serve us all well to live by:
1) Do your best.
2) Leave the place better than you found it.
We have had many mayors and councils who have done just that. We as a town are lucky for this. Some recent mayors being Norm Goodwin, Gord Snell, Ron House, Len Clark, Hugh Mackenzie were among them. Yes, and Claude Doughty will also prove to have been in their number because he also lives by these two rules. Also adding one more, which most have quietly added to their list like Claude. That rule is: put your own money where your mouth is.
History, I am positive, will prove his true worth to this town, as those before him have. So, stop judging him unjustly, as Ron House and others suggest in letters to the editor.
History will show Doughty’s good judgement in due time. Of this I am quite sure.
