Huntsville Public Library

Did you know that tomorrow, May 8 is Victory in Europe Day?

German representatives signed unconditional surrender documents on May 8, 1945 at the headquarters of General Dwight David Eisenhower, Supreme Commander of Allied Forces in Europe at Reims. This ended the Second World War in Europe, although conflict with Japanese forces continued.

In Ian Kershaw’s 2007 best seller Fateful Choices: Ten Decisions that Changed the World 1940-1941, the noted historian discussed key events that helped lead to this outcome. Another noted recent title on the Second World War is War Lords: An extraordinary recreation of World War Two through the Eyes of Hitler, Churchill, Roosevelt, and Stalin by Simon Berthon and Joanna Potts.

Why not check out one of these or another book from Huntsville library’s collection on the Second World War to mark the occasion?

The Battle of the Books is underway at Huntsville-area elementary schools. Huntsville library has three copies of each title under debate. Those not charged out are located in the special display near the new book area. There is a limit of two battle titles per person.

You may have noticed some changes on the outside of the Muskoka room glass wall in front of the information desk.

Due to low usage the vertical files and their cabinets are gone. In their place your library has new stylish tiered display units for our popular and expanding DVD and CD collections.

Last Saturday Robert Ward read at your library from his book All Good Pilgrims about walking the revived pilgrimage way through the Pyrenees from France to the shrine at Santiago (St. James) de Compestela in Spain.

Why not mark your calendars for the next Huntsville Read event on Thursday, May 22 at 7 p.m.?

Then you won’t miss hearing Karolyn Smardz Frost read from her winner of the 2007 Governor General’s Award for non-fiction, I’ve Got a Home in Glory Land on the underground railway.
