May 08, 2008

The lineup for the annual Good as Gold golf tournament next month at Deerhurst Resort is a who’s-who of Canada’s sports and entertainment worlds.

Tim Harrison, executive director and CEO of the Ladies First Hockey Foundation, announced Monday the partial lineup of celebrities and events that will be part of the sixth annual tournament, held in support of the national women’s hockey team.

“This is not just a golf tournament but a weekend experience,” said Harrison.”Aside from the Sunday golf tournament, highlights of the weekend will include the Saturday morning breakfast of champions featuring all current members of the national women’s team as well as several alumni players including 2006 flag-bearer Danielle Goyette.” Other highlights include a Saturday evening performance featuring Tom Cochrane and Red Rider along with the comedy of Mike Bullard.

Other famous names who have agreed to be part of the tournament include Walter Gretzky, Johnny Bower, Harry Neale, Michael Burgess, Sean Cullen, Tyler Stewart, Rod Black and General Rick Hillier.

The Ladies First Hockey Foundation is a not-for-profit foundation sanctioned by the members of the National Women's Hockey Team. The foundation was established by a group of individuals that recognized the hardships that these athletes face in striving to compete in their sport on the international stage.

The purpose the foundation is to work with team members both past, present and future, to help them achieve their goals as they relate to being able to compete for Canada.

The foundation provides financial assistance to the team members and their families at various times throughout the year. The funds raised from these events provide support to the players including aiding the parents and siblings of team members in attending Olympic competition. In 2006, over 85 family members attended in Torino, Italy, aided financially by the Ladies First Hockey Foundation.

“The Canadian’s women’s team competes at a world-class standard yet the players have to scrimp and save to manage their training obligations and cover the costs of competing around the world,” said Harrison. “The Good as Gold has raised more than $500,000 to date and that money has meant the players can spend more energy focusing on their play. It is our intention to help our girls be the best that they can be when they step on the ice in Vancouver in 2010.”
