While many people are excited about the feasting on the benefits of hosting the G8 Summit and the Ontario Youth Winter Games in 2010, the appetizer Huntsville residents should be looking forward to as well is the Olympic Torch Relay.
The participation of north Muskoka residents in the relay will set the stage for the two other events. With the summit and the youth games slated for early to mid-2010, the torch will light the way for the world to see the town’s community spirit when it comes through the municipality on Dec. 30 of next year.
The community has been selected to host a ceremony for the fabled flame, and one person from the town will be chosen to light the symbolic cauldron during the proceedings.
Community groups or individuals can offer their services in developing the local ceremony to make it a true Huntsville occasion. This is an occasion that we can all wrap our heads around, while at the same time possibly being able to wrap our hands around a legendary torch.
In addition to this, Huntsville residents can register as potential torch-bearers for the route leading into town and have their own personal Olympic moment.
What makes being part of the relay even more extraordinary is the 2010 relay will be the longest and biggest in Olympic history. The 100-day route will cover 45,000 kilometres with 12,000 runners carrying the flame through more than 1,000 communities.
When the runner brings the flame into the town in either late 2009 or early 2010, it will indeed be our time to shine as brightly as the torch’s blaze.
