Parry Sound-Muskoka MP Tony Clement announced Saturday that the G8 Summit will be held from June 25 to 27, 2010. He made the announcement at the annual President’s Ball at Deerhurst Resort, site of the 2010 event.
“I am thrilled to be able to announce the date of the summit,” said Clement in a press release. “This will be a fantastic opportunity to promote Canada’s priorities and values on the world stage, and it’s a great opportunity to show the world the colours of Huntsville and Parry Sound-Muskoka in June.”
Last June, Prime Minister Stephen Harper made the announcement that the summit would be coming to Deerhurst and Huntsville.
The 2010 G8 Summit will give Canada a chance to advance our interests, to advocate for open markets and free trade, and to champion freedom, democracy, human rights and the rule of law.
Deerhurst Resort in Huntsville was chosen to host the G8 Summit because of its excellent facilities, its location and security, stated the release.
In the past, communities that have hosted the summit have benefited in both the short and long term from the business and attention the event brings to the area. Since the prime minister’s announcement last June, Clement and others have often cited the 2002 G8 Summit held in Kananaskis, Alberta, which generated an estimated $300 million in short-term regional economic benefits.
