Barbershop Harmony Society chapters across Canada are joining forces with the Canadian Blood Services to encourage area residents to hit a high note with patients by giving blood at local blood donor clinics.
The barbershop singers are supporting donors and patients as part of a North America-wide blood drive this May.
The Muskoka Music Men will be singing their hearts out at the Huntsville blood donor clinic on May 10 at Faith Baptist Church.
Blood and blood products are in constant demand and 900,000 units will be needed in Canada this year for treatment of illnesses, surgery and trauma. While it's estimated that one out of two Canadians are eligible to donate blood, last year one in 75 actually did.
“We’re delighted the barbershop singers are helping us raise awareness of the need for more donors this month by giving the gift of music to donors and patients,” said Jennifer Mayhew, clinic development co-ordinator for the Canadian Blood Services. “With the arrival of warm weather, some of our regular donors may be busy with other activities and not able to make their appointments. Although these no-show donor slots can be filled with waIk-in donors, we hope that with the support of the Barbershop Harmony Society, all appointment slots will be filled and clinic goals reached.”
Local barbershoppers will be harmonizing in support of their blood drive on May 10 at the Bracebridge Rotary Centre For Youth from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., and donors will be treated to performances while they donate. Call 1-888-2-DONATE to book an appointment.
“One of the peak demand times for blood supplies is the long weekend in May,” stated Jim Mossman, vice president of marketing for the Muskoka Music Men. “With all of us living in Muskoka, chances are that we will have family travelling up to visit. So, it is in our own best interest to do all we can to ensure that there are adequate blood supplies on hand in case of traumatic accidents.”
O negative and AB positive blood donors are especially needed as we head into May. Residents are encouraged to make an appointment to give blood, find a clinic location and or have eligibility questions answered by calling 1-888-2-DONATE or visiting blood.ca.

I was thrilled, as a member of the Barbershop Harmony Society, to know that the hobby is alive and well in Huntsville, Ontario. I visited that wonderful area in 1993. My father, William Henry Knott, was born there on September 9, 1905. He and his three brothers left there in the 1920s and moved West. I was born in 1946 in Seattle and raised there. My father and mother taught me to appreciate music and I have been active in the hobby since 1983 as a chapter officer, singer, active quartet member and judge. I even sang in the 2006 5th place International Senior Quartet medalists, Silver Chords. I hope to visit my father's birthplace again some day and I will certainly look up the Muskoka Music Men and bust a chord with you. God Bless you for your good work and I hope to see some of you in Nashville this summer. By the way, for you hockey fans, my father was one of 5 referees in the NHL in the 1950s. (Bill Knott)
