The Algonquin Theatre has four more shows to present for the month of August before the fall lineup.Tonight, Aug. 15 sees the start of a three night run for the one-man comedy Defending the Caveman, the longest-running solo show in Broadway history.
Sponsored by the Huntsville Festival of the Arts, Defending the Caveman is fresh off the road from packed houses at the Just for Laughs festival in Montreal. Starring Canada’s own Michael Van Osch, the show is a must for everyone who recognizes that there are inherent differences between men and women. It’s a hilarious, clever and poignant dissection of human personality and is not to be missed no matter what your gender.
On Saturday, Aug. 18 the Muskoka Music Men present their annual 18th Night of Harmony.
The title of this year’s production is It’s Showtime, which recognizes that many of the songs which have been arranged in the distinctive four-part barbershop style first appeared in stage or screen performances.
The 26-man chorus will perform a number of show tunes among other selections. Guest performers are the renowned Toronto Northern Lights, whose expansive repertoire ranges from barbershop to Broadway, vocal jazz to doo-wop, and from Gershwin to the Beatles. This group of talented singers has represented the Ontario district at the Barbershop Harmony Society International Chorus Championship each year since their formation in 1998, bringing home five consecutive silver medals from 2001 to 2005.
On Aug. 20, Sexy Laundry takes the Algonquin stage, and runs through to Aug. 25.
This latest presentation from Theatre Muskoka is bound to touch a chord with just about everyone in a long-term relationship. Starring Robin Clipsham (of Peaches fame) and James Carroll ( CBC’s Wind at my Back), this romantic comedy is a sure-fire crowd pleaser.
On Wednesday, Aug. 29 Suzie McNeil brings her own show to Huntsville. As one of the top four finalists and the last woman standing on 2005’s RockStar: INXS, Sweet Suzie McNeil, as she came to be called. has quickly become a household name.
Touring as a backup singer for Pink, followed with a stint as Oz in We Will Rock You, McNeil is ready for her turn in the spotlight as one of Canada’s premier singers.
